1 – Shopping to discover the artisan shops of Salerno

Salerno is the ideal city to dedicate yourself to shopping. This choice is perfect even more if you need to shelter from the rain. The shopping streets are mainly Corso Vittorio Emanuele And Via dei Mercanti, divided in the middle by Portanova square which acts as a watershed between the more modern area of Salerno and the historic center. Along Corso Vittorio Emanuele you can find the most modern shops, while along Via dei Mercanti you can enter the oldest and most characteristic artisan shops. You can find out more on Via Dei Mercanti here, where I talked about it in more detail. The most characteristic artisan shops are those of ceramics, clay, handmade sandals and leather.

2 – Visit to the Museums and Churches of Salerno

Among the things to do in Salerno when it rains, surely you had thought of taking the opportunity to visit some museum or church of greater interest. Among them, I definitely recommend visiting the Salerno Cathedral (I also talk about it here), the Church of San Giorgio and the Church of San Pietro a Corte. The Church of San Pietro a Corte is a real archaeological complex that traces the most important stages in the history of Salerno and in which it is also possible to visit what remains of the ancient Roman thermal baths, the perfect place to discover something new while sheltering from the rain!

If you prefer to visit museums, I recommend the Alfonso Tafuri Ceramics Museum and the Virtual Museum of Salerno Medical School: in this virtual museum, the themes and the protagonists of a page of history are retraced in which Salerno with its medical school played a central role in the scientific renaissance of the West.

You will see that the colors and shapes will make you forget the grayness of the rain! Otherwise, read on below to discover two destinations near Salerno that are perfect for a rainy day.

First, I recommend that you search for the designer walls, colorful murals that make Salerno an open-air museum. I talk about it here in detail: “Hidden street-art in Salerno: the muri d’autore initiative”

If you are fascinated by architecture, however, you can devote yourself to the research of columns of the ancient city of Salernum, look for the historical buildings of this fascinating city, or visit the most modern works of architecture such as the Zaha Hadid Maritime Station or Liberty Square by Ricardo Bofill.

4 – Visit the village of Cava de Tirreni starting from Salerno

One of the things I always recommend doing when I’m asked what to do in Salerno when it rains is to visit the nearby area village of Cava de ‘Tirreni. This village is perfect for a walk even in the rain, thanks to its Old Town which is covered by about half a kilometer of arcades. You can walk and visit the village sheltered from the rain, in comfort. Furthermore, reaching Cava de ‘Tirreni from Salerno is very easy. You can reach it by car along the state road for about 20 minutes, otherwise, you can easily reach it in 10 minutes by train. Once you arrive at the Cava de ‘Tirreni s train tation, you will find yourself in the center and you can start your visit of the village.

Another thing I always recommend doing when asked what to do in Salerno when it rains is to visit Vietri sul Mare. I always recommend visiting the historic center of Vietri sul Mare because thanks to its bright colors and its pottery will manage to make you forget the greyness of the rain! You can reach it by car along the state road for about 10 minutes, otherwise, you can easily reach it in about 5 minutes by train. Once you arrive at the Vietri sul Mare train station, you will find yourself very close to the center and you can start your visit of the village.
